UK New Car Sales Continue to Fall
UK new car registrations dropped 1.3 percent from a year earlier to 156,621 units in November 2019, as multiple factors, including weak business and consumer confidence, economic uncertainty and confusion over diesel and clean air zones, combined to affect demand. The decline was driven primarily by weak private demand (-6.1 percent), while the business market also fell (-3.2 percent), but fleet registrations fared better (2.8 percent). For the second consecutive month, total alternatively fuelled vehicle (AFV) registrations reached a record market share, with more than one in 10 cars joining UK roads either hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure electric. Year-to-date, new car registrations were down 2.7 percent to 2.2 million.

UK New Car Sales Rise 1.3% in September
UK new car registrations rose 1.3 percent from a year earlier to 343,255 units in September 2019, driven by the fleet sector, which grew 8.6 percent. Meanwhile, private demand remained stable, up just 0.1 percent, while business registrations plunged 44.8 percent. Battery electric cars (BEVs) saw the biggest percentage growth of all fuel types, up 236.4 percent to 7,704 units, as new models boosted registrations. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) also saw growth for the first time in six months (22.6 percent). Diesel registrations fell 20.3 percent, while petrols experienced a moderate increase of 4.5 percent. Year-to-date market remains 49,000 units shy of same period in 2018 to record the lowest performance since 2013, amid political and economic uncertainty, with weak confidence stopping consumers from committing to big ticket purchases.

UK New Car Sales Fall for 6th Consecutive Month
UK new car registrations dropped 1.6 percent from a year earlier to 92,573 units in August of 2019, the sixth consecutive month of decrease as falling demand for diesel and plug-in hybrid vehicles continued to impact the overall market. In contrast, demand for petrol vehicles remained stable, up 1.0%; zero emission cars saw the biggest percentage growth, up 377.5%, to 3,147 units as new models and some pent up demand boosted registrations, while 4,014 hybrid electric cars also joined UK roads, an uplift of 36.2%. UK July New Car Sales Hit Lowest since 2012
UK new car registrations shrank 4.1 percent from a year earlier to 157,198 units in July 2019, the fifth consecutive month of decrease. It was also the lowest figure for a July month since 2012, amid political and economic uncertainty as well as consumers' uncertainty about future environmental regulation. By segments, sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles continued their recent decline, down 49.6 percent; and those of diesel vehicles fell for the 28th month, down 22.1 percent while petrol car volumes were stable. In contrast, demand for battery electric vehicles grew strongly by 158.1 percent, resulting in a 1.4 percent market share, the highest monthly market share on record. Also, hybrid electric cars increased by a notable 34.2 percent. Year-to-date, sales of new car sales went down 3.5 percent to 1.43 million units.

UK New Car Sales Drop for 4th Consecutive Month
UK new car registrations dropped 4.9 percent from a year earlier to 223,421 units in June 2019, the fourth consecutive month of decrease, as alternatively fuelled vehicle demand fell for the first time since April 2017. Demand contracted in all sectors, with private registrations seeing a decline of 4.8 percent, while larger fleet and business registrations also fell, down 2.5 percent and 37.1 percent respectively. Considering the first half of the year, new car registrations dropped 3.4 percent to 1.27 million units, as ongoing confusion over low emission zones and diesel, the removal of key ultra low emission vehicle incentives and an overall decline in buyer confidence affected the market.
